It is not necessary to know or speak Korean to be an English teacher in South Korea, but many take an active interest in learning the language and culture. Korean is a very unique language and when compared to English and the other romance languages from a grammatic point of view it is quite simplified. You will have ample opportunity to hone your Korean in many different ways. You can take the task on in a casual manner with a phrase book brought from home, or bought from an English book store here. Most communities have centers that offer basic Korean courses for free to foreigners. If you are more serious and academic minded about it there are several Universities (mostly in major metropolitan areas) who offer courses of study and degree programs on the Korean language. These range from basic conversation to an exploration of the Korean Literary landscape, where you will study poetry and prose of the great Korean authors.
